- Obituary -Georgia June Sterling SatreJuly 7, 1922Feb. 12, 2015Loving wife, mother, and grandmother, devoted friend, avid reader, world traveler, dedicated letter writer, honorary Norwegian, adventurer, June-Bug.Georgia "June" (Sterling) Satre of Reno, Nevada, passed away on February 12, 2015 at the age of 92. Born in Sedan, Kansas, she was the daughter of the late George and Lydia Sterling, their fifth of seven children. In 1928, June's family traveled from Pampa, Texas to start a new life in California. The family of 8, plus 6 cousins from the Guffey family, all traveled for 10 days in a single flat-bed Chevy truck outfitted with a tent made of cement sacks which covered the bed of the truck. They first settled in Hanford, California and shortly thereafter moved to Menlo Park, California where June attended Las Lomitas Elementary School and Sequoia High School. In November of 1941, just prior to the bombing of Pearl Harbor, a girlfriend (Betty Satre) wanted June to meet her brother, Selmer K. "Sam" Satre of Austin, Minnesota, who was then serving in the U.S. Cavalry and visiting his sister in Menlo Park. It was love at first sight! They were married a month later on December 20, 1941 and soon thereafter Sam was assigned to the U.S. Army. June followed him to South Dakota, Oklahoma, and various California locations, eventually with their first child, Sandy, in tow. Sam was sent to England in 1943 as part of the Operation Overlord invasion of Normandy, serving as a First Lieutenant of the 997th Field Artillery. They wrote each other love letters daily, which will be interred with June.Sam finally returned in the fall of 1945 and he and June settled in Menlo Park, California where Sam attended Stanford University on the G.I. Bill. During this time the family grew with the addition of three more children. They eventually settled in Martinez, California where June worked in the nursery of a local hospital while Sam was employed by the City of Martinez.Although not Norwegian, June embraced her husbands heritage, including Lute Fisk, Smorgasbords, Polka dancing and many other family activities offered by the Sons of Norway, an organization of which they were members throughout their lives. They were active in the America Field Service (AFS) and hosted many exchange students, 3 of whom, Folke Jespersen of Denmark, Chris Thomas of Australia, and Ella Petersen of Denmark, were like family and maintained close contact with them. Not only did June and Sam visit all three in their homes, but they each made repeated trips to the U.S. to see June and Sam, including July of 2012 when they were in Reno to celebrate June's 90th birthday. In 1992 June and Sam relocated to Reno, Nevada and she soon developed many friendships through the 20th Century Club, the Newcomers Club and her Caughlin Ranch neighborhood. She loved to travel and made trips all over the world with Sam (including a 3 month home exchange in Molde, Norway), and, following Sam's death, June continued to travel with friends and family members to Hawaii, Europe, Australia, Egypt, New Zealand and Mexico. In addition to travelling, she loved to read, play cards, and paint. Many of the oil landscape paintings that she created are now prized possessions of her children and grandchildren. Above all June enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. June will be greatly missed. She always had a ready smile, an infectious laugh and a tender heart. Like her father, George, she was a great storyteller, and was always ready for a new adventure. She gave unconditional love and open-hearted hugs that melted away any problems of the day.June was predeceased by her parents and her 5 brothers and 1 sister. Her loving husband, Sam, passed away in July 1995. Surviving are her four children: Sandra Lee Satre Porter (Corbett) of Bellingham, Washington; Ken Satre (Linda) of Homer, Alaska; Phil Satre (Jennifer) of Reno, Nevada , and Rita Satre Cox (Ron Cox) of Livermore, California. She was the devoted grandmother of Jason Beam (Marina), Keith Porter (Melody), Kimberly Porter, Malena Satre Raymond (Spence), Allison Satre Manzari (Johnnie), Jessica Satre, Peter Sterling Satre, Steven Cox (Nicole), Lydia Cox Renner (Adam), Matthew Satre, and Sam Satre. June was also adored by eight great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Family and friends will gather for a Celebration of June's Life at a time and location yet to be determined. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to the charity of your choice. To sign into the online guest book please visit www.waltonsfuneralhomes.com.The family wishes to express their appreciation and thanks to June's special friend Tracy Busch, the staff of Stone Valley Memory Care, Dr. Bryan Young, and the doctors and nurses who attended June at Renown Regional Hospital.Published in Reno Gazette-Journal from Feb. 17 to Feb. 22, 2015----------------------------------------------------2 April 1930 census of Township 3, San Mateo County, CA, found the Sterling family living in dwelling #8.
