THOMAS A. MILLER -
Thomas A. Miller was born Feb. 11, 1809 in Miami County, OH. His father, William Miller, came from Ohio to Lawrence County, IL in 1816. There were eight other children: James, Robert, John, Jane, Samuel, Elizabeth, Rachel and Belinda.
Thomas A. settled on land southwest of Russellville. On Dec. 1, 1831, he married Emily Drake. He and Emily had 11 children: Samuel, Nancy, Rachel, Frances Ellen, John, Robert, Hiram, Redmond, Amanda, William M. and Thomas J.
Of these, Nancy married a Griggs, Frances Ellen married a Jordan, moved to Knox County, IN, Hiram married a Madora Winemiller, Redmond married Brittie Gould, Amanda married a Shoulders.
He was a farmer and a breeder of Holstein cattle. He donated land for the first Rising Sun Church. His son, Hiram and his wife, were charter members of the rebuilt church. Thomas A. was a school trustee and donated land for the Miller Schoolhouse. His descendants as well as area children attended this school.
His wife, Emily, died May 21, 1857. he married twice after her death. 2. Mary Kent on Dec. 3, 1859. 3. Jane Henegan on Oct. 10, 1867.
He died Feb. 6, 1894 at the home of his son, Redmond, in Vincennes, IN.
He is buried in a family plot in Price Cemetery at Russellville.
His obituary in the Vincennes Weekly Western, Sunday, Feb. 9, 1894 stated: "The deceased was for many years a leading and influential citizen of Lawrence County, IL and was one of the most successful farmes in the vicinity of Russellville where he resided."
The land by the church and school passed on to his son, Hiram, then to his son, Charles E. Miller.
