Talk with an Old Timer
Reminiscenses (sic) of the Olden Times
On Saturday last, we were seated in our sanctum, we were surprised by a visit from Nathaniel Conklin of Putnam Valley, County of Putnam.
Mr. Conklin is a hale hearty old man who was born on the 21st day of September, 1790, and consequently will be 91 years of age next September.
A Third Visit from an Old Resident
On Saturday last, our old friend N. Conklin paid us another visit, and this is what he had to say:
Seventy years ago, the mail from Albany to New York was carried in a tin box strapped to a man's back, on which U.S.A. was distinctly stamped. He also wore a wide white belt over his shoulder, in front of which was marked U.S.A. A few years afterward, a man named Zebud Lounsbury contracted to carry the mail on horseback and it was so carried until steamboating was introduced when they monopolized the mails. Mr. Conklin distinctly remembers these events.
