Lange 4 3/12 SD IA IA - Daughter ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ A Note about Olive from Bianca's daughter Denise: I grew up hearing about the Chapmans beautiful red hair as well. My Mother always wanted a re-headed child (she got a blond and brunette)! Olives condition was early onset Alzheimers and my mother Biancas is mixed vascular and Alzheimers. She has 2 of the Alzheimer genes so they are in the gene pool. What I know from my Mom was that Olive was a bit of a spitfire. She had a great sense of humor, sang and played saxophone and piano both very well and was always playing music and singing at home or with small groups and at church. Both my mother and my sister started playing saxophone on Olives silver sax as well. In the early days Olive was a school teacher in a one room school house for awhile. That may have been before she married etc. Her husband Curt - a good German and second youngest of the Lange boys - was the first Lange to be born in the US. He was a bit aloof and stern but loved his family and friends and would do anything for all of them. He was the White Eagle gas supplier for the area and delivered to all of the farms in the Murdo area etc in rain, shine and blizzard so he was much appreciated. Their home was in Murdo in town and it had a large White Eagle statue on a fence post in front of the house so it was easy to identify. One of my few memories of Murdo when they lived there was him putting me up to sit on the shoulders of the eagle when I couldnt have been more that three or four. My Mother has corresponded with the woman who has lived in that house a long time for years. We tried to figure out a way to purchase and ship the White Eagle statue but figured it was better to leave it where it belongs. Last year she sold it to a tourist who I am sure gave her a pretty penny as it is now a collectable. There was a piece in the Murdo Coyote a few years ago with pictures of the family and Olive and Curts house. My Mother said that Olive wasnt wild about staying in Murdo. It wasnt an easy life and she was a very social person in a small town. At some point Curt got an offer from the oil company to move up in the company and move to one of the larger cities in South Dakota where the business offices were but he wouldnt take it. He loved his life, family and community in Murdo too much. Apparently Olive was pretty unhappy about that. She wanted to go somewhere that was more fun! My Mom said that Olive was the first in town to bob her hair, smoked, and went to dances by herself because Curt wasnt interested, and had a ball anyway! I think it was frowned upon by some in town but if it was she didnt care. She and my mother were very close and my mother was devastated by her early dementia and leaving Murdo. My Mom and Dad would have had to move for my Dads work anyway but the timing of us moving to Des Moines coincided roughly with Olive needing more care than Curt could give her and soon Curt and Olive moved to Des Moines with us. Curt and Olive only lived with us a few months I think before she had to go into a nursing home where she spent 5-7 years bedridden and knowing no one. A truly horrible disease and traumatic for everyone. My Mom never completely got over leaving South Dakota and losing her Mother to Alzheimers, but Olives great love of people and sense of humor lived on in all of her three children and was passed down to theirs as well. One of the saddest things is that Olive had forever kept a fairly detailed and regular diary of her life. When Curt and Olive moved from Murdo to Des Moines and Olive was getting so bad, both my Mom and Curt were so devastated that in the moving they just got rid of everything including her diaries. What a loss!!!!!!!! Curt was a member of a Masonic Lodge chapter that started up as were other of the Lange boys. Do you think any of the Chapmans were? Olive was apparently not very happy about it because she was in the Methodist (I think) church and the Masons were secretive and questionable in those regards. Olives three kids and their families had two reunions in the Black Hills three generations when the youngest of our children were in early and late grade school (late 1980s early 90s). One of these was coordinated with one of Murdos town reunions when a number of the towns settlers were still alive and my Mother went to another town reunion about 10 years later. Did any Chapmans that you know of go to any of the Murdo town reunions? I dont recall any there. My daughter Jenna and I went on a mother-daughter pilgrimage the year before last to South Dakota and Murdo. The prairie and Murdo been instilled in her blood as well! She is a writer and got a short travel story about the trip published in a travel anthology last year. Mom talked a lot about the Chapmans in general and she said they were a close family as well. One of Olives siblings families settled in White River as you probably know (I thought you mentioned this but cant find the reference now), I think it was John or Jess and had several children. My Mom talked about the bad years (drought etc) being really hard on them. Olive only had 3 children and lived in town (She and Curt werent so dependent on the weather and farming since he worked for the oil company) and she and my Mom would go down frequently to help them out and would often bring a couple of their kids back to their house for a period to help out until they eventually packed up and moved to California. My Mom said that she was always struck by how much love and fun she saw in that family. She said that no matter how much struggle they were going through they were still the happiest most in love couple and family she ever saw. It was sad for Olive when they left. Curt drove her out to California when Olive was going into Alzheimers so she could see them again before she got any worse. Apparently she was already bad enough that it was not an easy trip but thats how much they meant to Olive.
