Obituary - Claque Van Slyke - Former Patronato President
Clague Van Slyke, attorney, community leader and long-time president of the Patronato board of directors died recently. He was 84.
Clague served on a number of organizations including: the Board of Directors of the Southern Arizona Pre-School Foundation, the Tucson Performing Arts Center Action Committee and the First Christian Church, Disciples of Christ centennial committee. But he had a special love for Mission San Xavier and its restoration. He served as president for more than a decade at a time when the prospect of preserving the church was still in doubt. With the implicit backing of Snell & Wilmer, the law firm for which he worked, Clague led the board successfully during some very lean times
Everyone felt comfortable with Clague at the helm, knowing we had a good, wise, and very smart attorney... said Bunny Fontana, a Patronato founder and board member. We also had a person who knew the history, sociology, economic, and political makeup of Tucson and Pima County as well as anyone and who was widely and deeply respected throughout the community.
Patronato board member Lorraine Drachman said that Clague had a way of bringing people together and doing it with a generosity of spirit that made everyone comfortable. Fontana agreed. He was a natural born peacemaker and diplomat, one who always kept his eye on the ultimate goal and who never veered direction toward achieving it.
The 2008 Christmas Concerts at San Xavier were dedicated to Clagues memory.
