Obituary - Martha Ella Fugitt

Martha Ella Davis Fugitt, the daughter of John R. and Betty Davis was born August 20, 1877, near Clever, and departed this life at her home south of Republic March 8, 1950, at the age of 72 years, 6 months and 18 days. On March 3, 1893, she was united in marriage to J.W. Fugitt, and to this union 4 children were born: one daughter, Chloe, died in infancy, and one son, John, passed away at the age of 18 months. Those who survive are her husband, J.W. Fugitt, of the home; two sons, Leonard and Boyd, both of Republic; five grandchildren, J.W. Fugitt Jr., Mrs. Joan Long, Stewart B. Fugitt, Mrs. Wanda Lee Hazen, and Jack Fugitt. Eight great-grandchildren: two brothers, Albert Davis of Clever, Fred Davis of Springfield; two sisters, Mrs. Willie Little and Mrs. Lena Clark, both of Springfield; one aunt, Mrs. Callie Head of McKinley; and one uncle, Barney Davis of Republic and other relatives and a host of friends. At the age of 12 she confessed her faith in Christ and united with the Old Union Hill Christian Church, which later was moved to Clever, where she remained a faithful member, having been a follower of Christ for 60 years. In 1903 the family located on a farm on Terrell creek south of Republic where they established a permanent home. Aunt Ella was a kind and faithful wife, and loving mother and a friend to all who knew her. Funeral arrangements were under direction of Harris Funeral Home of Clever. Services were conducted Sunday afternoon by Rev. A.T. Mahanay of Republic, assisted by Rev. Carl Burkhart of Clever at the Clever Christian Church. Burial was in the Wise Hill Cemetery.

Mrs. J. W. Fugitt passed away at her home a few miles south of Republic Wednesday night of last week at the age of 72 years, following an illness of about two months due to a stroke. The deceased was born near Clever on August 20, 1877, and was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John R. Davis. She grew to womanhood in the place of her birth and on March 3, 1893, she was married to J. W. Fugitt. To their union four children were born. A daughter, Chloe, died in infancy and a son, John, died at the age of 18 months. Two other sons, Leonard and Boyd, of Republic with their father, survive. Four grandchildren, Mrs. Joan Long, Stewart B. Fugitt, Mrs. Wanda Lee Hazen and Jack Fugitt; eight great-grandchildren; two brothers, Albert Davis of Clever and Fred Davis of Springfield; two sisters, Mrs. Willie Little and Mrs. Lena Clark of Springfield; an aunt, Mrs. Lena Clark of Springfield; an aunt, Mrs. Callie Head of McKinley; and one uncle, Barney Davis, of Republic; other relatives and many friends also survive. At the age of 12 years, Mrs. Fugitt confessed her faith in Christ and united with the old Union Hill Christian Church, which later was moved to Clever, where she remained a faithful member until death. In 1903, the family established a home on a farm on Terrel Creek, where they have since lived. They were hard workers and built a permanent home, which is one of the most substantial in this section. They reared their family and dispensed genuine hospitality to many friends and relatives. Mrs. Fugitt was a devoted wife, a kind mother and a dependable neighbor and friend. Funeral services were held in her church home at Clever Sunday afternoon with the Rev. A. Taylor Mahanay, pastor of the Christian Church, conducting the service. The Clever Church choir sang for the service, and Miss Jean Bohm sang a solo. The church was filled to overflowing with friends and relatives and a wealth of lovely floral tributes banked the casket and the front of the church. Burial was in Wise Hill Cemetery.
